The TRBO 50?

I got this fun idea, well- maybe it's not all that fun, but it sounded fun to me!  But, have you guys tried the UFO 50 game? It's a fake list of games from a fake console from the 80s. It's fairly cheap and a nice collection of retro-inspired games (some are amazing!) that you can grab and just play in a collection. I think it's out for current gen stuff, and steam.  But it got me thinking.

Now I know we got the Turbografx Mini, but let's just say what if you could put together a list of YOUR 50 games you'd use to represent the Turbografx in a similar collection. Now say, you'd want- a good variety of styles (so it's not just all shooties and Imported RPGs), and it was a good variety of games throughout the time the system was out.

OH, and what if!!  You could ONLY include a sequel IF you included the original?  So like for instance, you REALLY LOVE Bonk's Revenge, but hate Adventure?  Too bad, if the first isn't on your list, you CANNOT include it's sequel!

So for instance of the 50 games, you could pick

3 games from 1987
5 games from 1988
7 games from 1989
7 games from 1990
8 games from 1991
8 games from 1992
5 games from 1993
5 games from 1994
2 games from 1995

My list would look something like this:

1987- Not a massive list to pull from, but these are the top 3 for a good variety and fun

Bikkuriman World - to get the Wonder Boy series included!

China Warrior - show off those GIANT sprites!

Victory Run - Get a racing game in early

1988- Gets a little harder here as some great games won't make the cut

Alien Crush - Pinball madness!!  Another good one for variety

Legendary Axe - Of course!  One of the best action platformers!

Space Harrier - show off the arcade chops of the Turbo!

Vigilante- Another good arcade conversion, but also a fun beat 'em up!

Dragon Spirit- Our first shootie, and shows the Turbo isn't just doing spaceship shooters like everything else (but will soon!)

1989- This is when the Turbo was released in the US, and PCE had an AMAZING year for releases. I have to sift through dozens to pick just 7, damn!!

Dungeon Explorer- It's gotta make the cut, I mean the first REAL multiplayer game with 5 players!!  Good Gauntlet killer too!

Bloody Wolf - We need our run n' gun!

Neutopia - Get that action RPG action! We got Zelda too!!

Bonk's Adventure - for obvious reasons!

R-Type - Essential shootie

War of the Dead - Oddlball choice, but honestly it has good variety, and a fine Zelda II clone with Zombies!!

Ys I&II - First CD game, and also essential for any list!

1990- Another AMAZING year, and only 7 choices!!

Splatterhouse - shows this Turbo 50 isn't just for kids!

Ninja Spirit - Best Ninja action possible!

Super Star Soldier - fantastic shoot 'em up- essential!

Military Madness - strategy war at it's finest!

Outrun - Shows off how far the Turbo came since Victory Run (another racing sim)

Bomberman - Absolutely essential to get '93 on the list!

Jack Nicholas Golf -  I know.. Golf? But yeah we need some variety and those video golf fans love this right?

1991- Now we start to get some big titles from the Turbo/PCE CD lineup! 8 games

Cadash - WD's first translated works and an awesome arcade conversion

Buster Bros. - incredible multiplayer fun! Kind of our best single screen puzzle platformer

Bonk's Revenge - get another mascot platformer in here!

Dragon Slayer - Amazing Turn Based RPG, finally!

The Manhole - unique point n' click game for kids?

Prince of Persia - A port of the legendary game, and a damn fine one too!

Salamander - A sexy pick, and we're going with this over Gradius for multiplayer shooting action!

Dragon's Curse - A crazy good port of an awesome series!

1992- We get 8 picks here, so let's go!!  So many to choose from!

Parodius Da! - without Gradius on the list, we need this Konami mock'em up!

New Adventure Island- one of the best platformer games

Air Zonk - A blast!  Of course!

Bomberman '93 - best party game on the system!

Gate of Thunder - Why did Konami leave this off the Turbo Mini pack?

LOOM - one of my favorites, and a lovely port!  (Personal choice?)

Shapeshifter - Cool side scrolling open concept game like Metroid!?  Yes!  And not a bad game at all!

Gekisha Boy/ Photograph boy - Those Pokemon Snap kids will love this!  (and I do too!)

1993 - When I got into the Turbo personally, another amazing selection, but we need to narrow it down to JUST 5!?

Riot Zone - I chose this over Double Dragon 2, just because it's a showcase game, HUGE sprites, awesome soundtrack and kind of like all those awesome beat 'em ups the kids like...  Great Value?

Magical Chase - I'm choosing to include this one using the US release date, and maybe that's cheating but SO BE IT!  It looks gorgeous and plays great!

Lords of Thunder - Fucking metal to the masses!  Has to make the cut!

Street Fighter II CE- essential fighting game, but not the only 1v1 fighter to make the cut!

Beyond Shadowgate - The best beat 'em up/point n' click game ever made!

1994 - Things calm down a bit here as we only get 5 selections from this year!

Puyo Puyo CD - need more puzzle games!

Popful Mail - excellent adventure game!

Gotzendiener - Isometric Gotz GET!

Fatal Fury Special - ACD game represent!  Absolute BANGER of a port too!

Dynastic Hero - Another solid RPG Adventure platformer to round out the Wonder Boy games on PCE

1995 only gets 2 games to round out the TRBO 50!

Sapphire is essential just to show off the graphics!

Far East of Eden: Kabuki Clash - I know, this is the ONLY Far East of Eden game I included in this list.. I wanted SO BADLY to include the first one way back in 1989, but...

As an added bonus for the 51st selection of our TRBO 50 - I would add 1996's Bazaru as a fun unlockable game you'd get when you beat at least 25 of the 50 games here.

Which games would you include? Did I miss any (YES!)? I had looked at this list a solid 10 minutes before posting it, and yeah, there's a ton I could change depending on the mood I'm in. Maybe more sports games? PCE has a bunch of good baseball and soccer games, and those have their fans. I mean Kunio Soccer should make the cut, and so should John Madden DUO.  But alas, this is what we're left with?  How would your list look?

Lycos, where did you go?

This last week I finished up a unique open concept action platformer that rarely gets spoken about. Not to any extent of being unjustifiably so, just, people (even in smaller Turbo communities) really don’t talk much about it. With having it fresh in my memory I can see why it’s mostly forgettable. It has a generic name, lacks any real interesting features from the onset, and the cover art isn’t exactly going to grab you, but how about the story?

The land of Krellion was once a peaceful and prosperous place, protected by five powerful wizards known as the Ring of Five. However, a dark wave of evil swept across the land, causing the rivers to turn black and the wizards to vanish, captured by the shadow realm. The Dark Ones, three evil beings from the shadow realm, intend to shatter the barrier between Krellion and their realm during the mid-summer equinox, plunging the land into eternal nightmare.

The only hope for Krellion lies with Lyos, a barbarian with the power to change his shape at will. His mission is to rescue the wizards and the Ring of Five before the Dark Ones can carry out their plan.

Must be why I picked it honestly. I’ve been on a bit of a quest to find the fun in some of the obscure corners of our hobby, in which Shapeshifter did not disappoint in being both odd and unique. You’re rewarded with an initial feeling of polish in early areas and pounded in the dirt with clunky controls and unfair boss battles. BUT BUT, There’s an AMAZING variety of areas, and LOADS of PARALLAX!!!

WHERE DO I SIGN UP!?!

A lot of this game’s vibe tends to run parallel to other early 90s gems like Shadow of the Beast and Magician Lord. It’s more like the former in terms of you can backtrack in an open world concept not to dissimilar to Metroid of Castlevania II. You have shops you can purchase weapons and armor, you have NPC’s you can talk to (however, town folk wandering around won’t say a word to you), and a plethora of COOL transformations you can use at your disposal throughout the game.

The panther is the first ability you’ll gain, and holy crap THIS is where the pain starts. The very next area is full of near miss platforming up a cliff, and the panther controls AWFULLY! With each major area completed, you’ll save various characters throughout that will reward you with new transformations. Five different creatures in total; the aforementioned panther, shark, golem, gold dragon, and of course ULTRA MAN!! Ok, maybe not actually Ultra Man®, but it’s pretty crazy cool looking and you can fly through space blowing up bad guy alien gods! Ok, phwew, spoilers.. but yeah- this game gets CRAZY!

I struggled to grasp the transformation parts entirely, even if the concept was super fun. A few of them you only need to reach a certain area and then are able to just transfer back into Lycos and continue onward. The golem area alone is rather silly, as all you need to do is walk (slowly) in one direction avoiding asteroids/rocks falling on you. His armored body prevents you from taking as much damage as any other transformation so it’s required, but still a silly spot in the game. While the shark area is really fun! You’re given glimpses of a water world early on but any time you jump in you quickly drown and need to find a way in. Honestly, the shark areas also have the best play control. No slippery cliffs or clunky jump issues in the water, you just swim around and shoot lazers from your freak’n eyes!!

You can tell through my 3 part playthrough that I got extremely frustrated with some of the unfair boss battles at the end. The amoeba boss/machine thingy and final boss are easily the most furious I’ve been at a game in ages. The play controls, especially with the panther in the platforming areas are just terrible, and could’ve easily used a bit more polish. There’s multiple ways to soft-lock your adventure too if you decide to explore a bit more with the transformations. Transforming costs gems and there is only a finite amount available to you throughout the game, and they do NOT regenerate, so once you lose them all, they’re gone forever!! Towards the end, I just used the gold dragon to fly over most everything too, so I was sucking down gems like there was no tomorrow!

BUT! Still, even with all of those flaws, Shapeshifter still is a rewarding adventure that really pushes what our beloved PCE/Turbografx can do. Beautiful visuals with a fun atmospheric (albeit out of place at times) soundtrack leads to an impressive game. I’m happy I took the time to finally play through it all, and would recommend everyone at least check it out. That is, if they have an inner yearning for absolute pain in the unpolished later areas!

A very Dangerous Journey!

Here's a crazy way to connect Gary Gygax to the Turbografx. (Not just through their collective love of the letter "X")

in 1992-93 Gary left TSR he went to start his own RPG that eventually became Dangerous Journeys. Very similar to D&D with a few twists, but it never really took off the ground. For a bit of time Electronic Arts and NEC/TTi had planned on releasing video games based on the world for PC, SNES, and Turbo Super CD!! It was planned to release around the same time as Beyond Shadowgate, so I was EXTREMELY excited to see this release... However, it was never meant to be. 🙁

Gary Gygax’s Dangerous Journeys™ Super CD Adventure Game

Coming soon for the new Turbo Duo is TurboGrafx Super CD version of Gary Gygax’s Dangerous Journeys™, a new Mulitgenre Roleplaying Game System, This product can be used on the new Turbo Duo platform or the TurboGrafx CD accessory system with system-upgrade card. Initial release of the Dangerous Journeys product is planned for April, 1993.

For more information contact 1-800-366-0136Dangerous Journeys is a trademark of Omega Helios Limited.TTI Turbo Technologies, Inc.

According from the Turbo Grafx ad so, the release date was optimistically set to April 1993. In fact, between the 1992 and 1993, some previews of the game appeared on the Turbo Play Magazine.

Due to TSR's lengthy lawsuit against Gary in regards to his Dangerous Journeys game being too similar in style/gameplay and NEC/TTi starting to bow out of the video game market by mid 1993-1994, the game was ultimately scrapped....

I prefer Legendary Axe 2

Debates like this are timeless. Which game is your favorite in a series? There are your Super Mario Bros. 3 folks, the Super Mario World fans, and then those oddballs who love Super Mario Bros. 2. What defines a specific game as "better"? Is it play control, story, graphics, music, or something else? Does nostalgia play a role in defining a game as better? I think it's a little bit of all of the above. There can be a difference between which game is simply "better" versus which game is your personal favorite.

For today's series in question, there are only two games. Even stranger (not quite as strange as the Wonder Boy/Adventure Island series strange) is that these games are only related as a "1" and "2" series on US shores. Legendary Axe was released as Makyō Densetsu on the PCE in Japan in 1988. Legendary Axe II was released as Ankoku Densetsu in 1990. They were developed by Victor Musical Industries, Inc. as games with similar styles: hulking, scantily dressed men wandering about, slashing and hacking baddies to pieces. The original had a unique attack method of charging your attacks the further you leveled up.

LA2 did away with the charge-your-attack method and built its game world around darker stages with added gore and a slightly horror theme—a style not too different from many early 16-bit adopters like Namco's Splatterhouse. Not to mention, the focus of LA1 was the warrior wielding an axe to destroy monsters. In LA2, the axe is mostly a mid-range weapon and rarely seems preferred to the swords and whips found within.

The first time I booted up Legendary Axe, I noticed similarities to another game: the arcade and NES release of Astyanax. The charging attack, accessing items through statues within stages—even some of the monsters you fight look similar. Looking further into it, Astyanax and Legendary Axe were developed by many of the same programmers! So, in essence, LA could be considered part of the Astyanax series!

Then we got Legendary Axe 2. It feels like a breath of fresh air. Some of the flaws of LA1 have been corrected. A darker palette, more original monsters, better level design. The character just feels more capable, and as a result, the game is easier too, which could be considered a drawback, I suppose, but to me, it was a welcome change. "But you hardly even use an axe!?"  Sure, "Golden Axe" by Sega only had one character using an axe too.  It's ok.

Legendary Axe 2 just feels more 16-bit to me. Like NEC/Victor figured out how to make a game that could hold its own against big arcade games on the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. LA2 is a step up in soundtrack, in boss design, and includes much larger levels with better balance. LA2, to me, feels more on par with Ninja Spirit in the sense that it looks like a "next gen" game. No way could it have been accomplished on an NES. I'm not too sure the LA1 couldn't have been an NES game with it's presentation...

I love both games. It's a shame we never got an LA3, as that would have blown all of our minds, especially if it would have gotten a Super CD release! I guess to some extent, we could appreciate Shape Shifter as a somewhat similar action game with open-concept/"Metroid"-style worlds, but that would be a massive stretch.

Which do you prefer? What other polarizing opinions are there in the PC Engine universe? Lords of Thunder vs. Gate? Neutopia I vs. II? Favorite Ys game?

Order of the Griffon review and... patch update?

Some of my all-time favorite gaming experiences growing up are with the classic SSI & TSR "Gold Box" Dungeons and Dragons adventure RPGs. I have fond memories of playing through Pool of Radiance which then got me hooked on the D&D world. So much that I read the collected Forgotten Realms books that correlated to the games!
When I finally took the plunge into my beloved Turbo Duo universe I quickly sought out any and all RPG style games. I picked up Might and Magic III, Beyond Shadowgate, Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest and finally D&D Order of the Griffon! I was completely hooked on the gameplay style with excellent graphics, great puzzling dungeons, and fun strategic battles. BUT! One thing always bugged me about the game that kept it from truly being a top tier RPG for obey.  The EXCELLENT chip tunes had the strangest of bugs...  The music would at the strangest times totally glitch out and stop at the point of any action or sound effect.

Like for instance, while you're in a battle the music pumping out of your speakers rocks and gets you into the mood for WAR!  However, once you select an attack or magic spell and use one on an opponent the music comes to a halt.. and you're left.. in silence..  Often for many minutes while you're in a difficult battle. The music glitch even happens at the beginning of the game when you're selecting your party!  I really LOVE the soundtrack and wound up sitting still for quite a while to hear some of the cool chiptunes to completion, but most would never hear them fully with such a weird glitch. It's like, someone at SSI did playtest this right?

It was even pointed out in one of Spida1's more recent Turbo Views episodes in Turbo Views #120!  You can check out the review here:

In GREAT news, thanks to our awesome modder and homebrew community in the PC Engine scene you can check out a fix that was put together that corrects (most of) the music glitches in the game!  No longer do you have to fear that your awesome chiptunes will hault if you're attacking someone in a heated battle!  You can check out the ROM with the fixed game here!

Farland Story FX Translation in Progress!

Great news in the PC-FX scene!

Over at our little group on social media at We <3 PC-FX some amazing news came out about a guy working on a translation of one of the best RPGs on PC-FX!  Farland Story FX is being worked on for the English speakers dreaming to one day play through an FX RPG!

"Love to share with you guys first-hand something I've been working on. As a side-hobby I've been learning Japanese for the last two months and thought I could help the community with a English translation of Farland Story FX. I've been working on this for the past month and have reached a stage where I am comfortable to share it with others. If you would like to try it yourself, apply delta patch to your own CD ripped through TurboRip. "

The file is available within that FB group with encryption key.

The Original poster mentioned; "I think I have spotted most of the text in the binary, I've played till stage 6 and all seems to be well. I will continue play it though to double check. I've also been able to replace some of the graphics tiles for the ingame menu words. However FMV remain untranslated, and the audio only dialogue still remains. Hope you like it!"

Keith Courage Action Figure Box Set coming Feb 2020!

Hot on the heels of the Turbografx Mini coming in 2020 Konami has announced a rare pre-order bonus for those lucky to grab the offer off Amazon last year!

The Nova Suit was made famous in the game Keith Courage that happens to also be the original pack-in game with the Turbografx-16 when it hit state side in 1989. The release was infamous for being rather underwhelming in pushing the limits of the new "16-bit" console stateside. Aside from the goonie overworld area that Keith romped around killing cheese cheetahs and picking up coins to buy stuff from shops, the Nova Suit section proved to be pretty exciting and offered challenging gameplay. Many fans of the game wished the entire game was made up of Nova Suit levels!

A New Start Is Upon us

PCEFX suffered an attack similar to the attacks that SEGA-16 suffered earlier this year. The host pulled the plug on the forum side of things since the attack happened by exploiting a security hole on that side of things. The host is willing to continue hosting the site, but has demanded a restructuring.

Current places to find other members:

http://pcengine.freeforums.org/index.php

https://www.facebook.com/PCEFX

http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-PC-En ... are-Bible/

Does this mean the end of an era with PCEFX? Hopefully not. But everything is in the works to get a place to meet back up and running for us and the Forums Paul has put in place are just excellent!

TV Sports that Never Was

I had been waiting for this game in 1991. Then in 1992 the game was cancelled by TTI. I think it looks pretty neat. I like the spot catching and the players seem animated pretty well. The TV Sports that may have got the system into the sports genre. What could have been.

Keep on playin guys until next time Windy

Efera and Jiliora Excellent in most respects

I had never heard of this of game until I came across a review of it at the Brother's Duomazov's website. I picked the game up and it sat for quite sometime. In fact I just recently put every single game I owned up in order to get some much needed money together to catch up on bills before popping this one into the old turbob.

I'm not going to write a huge review on the game cause I have not finished but I have been playing it now for at least 5 or 6 hours. First off the game Graphically is top notch for a game of it's time. It's a CDrom game from the first batch of PCEngine Cd's. The Artwork is outstanding! Music is also Top Notch. The tunes are very reminiscent of an Ys or even a Dragon Slayer Title. Sound effects they aren't that great but they will do. I must say this game is indeed a surprise for such a Cheapy title that can be grabbed for a mere 6.00 to 8.00 bucks.

The gameplay here is a bit Diablo, Y's and Dungeon Explorer all Rolled into 1. You will traverse some pretty large maps working your way forward to the next town or forest. Watchout for the Giant wasps! Haha! you'll find out. Towns and inhabited areas will take a bit of exploration. There is lots to be learned in each of these area's. First thing you will want to do as in any Type of RPG is find a weapon shop and the armory. There is also a healer and a few other surprises to be found.

The cutscenes to me are just spectacular. I love these kind of cutscenes. They are not run of the mill anime still shots. These are a work of pixel art I've only seen in a few PCE/TG16 games that frankly I wish had been put into more titles. You will have to play to get the Picture of this most excellent feature of this beautiful game.

Is the game perfect? Is Old Windy off his rocker? Well no the game is certainly not perfect. It does have some visual slow down at times. I know this will drive some of you nuts. Me? No, I don't think it kills the gameplay at all. The game is very easily playable without the knowledge of Japanese. Pretty much just snoop around towns and you will be fine. I'm going to cut this short but felt this game should be posted as a must buy for PCE owners. It's just a nice ride. All I will say to end this short is this.......Do yourself a favor and level grind a little bit! Don't be a fool and save as often as you can!

**UPDATE** This game has a 2 player option. So for you guys who like to play co-op Here is your game!

What will the Future Hold?

As some of you Know I have put Pretty much my entire collection of TG16 Systems and games up on Ebay. It's made me sick to do so. We just need the money. The doctor bills over the last 5 years or so have just killed us and I just found out the Goverment passed a Law allowing the union to cut my retirement by more than half and they intend to do such as they sent me a letter this week with their intentions. Times are Tough. Now I do not plan on going anywhere. I'm keeping my PCE with about 20 games and if my systems and games sell I do intend on picking up a few Hucard titles that I have always wanted like Ninja Gaiden. So I will be writing up some Hucard Thoughts and maybe about the agony of losing my TG16 collection. In the event that my system doesn't sell on ebay I will be offering a split sale on PCEFX sometime later in the week. This might actually allow me to keep one system. If anyone is interested in my sale here is the ebay link it just has a few days: Windys TG16 Sale .

UPDATE! I had a very good first week of sales. I want to thank everyone who purchased games from me. I lost some great games. However! I got to keep about 70 games and have been rejuvenated to play these games I have had for a very longtime. Thank you Pcenginefx for purchasing. I hope the prices were right and you guys get the enjoyment out of them that I had over the years. some of those games I had for 20 years.

Windy is King "Anearth Fantasy Stories"

Well I was inside Castle Rostarl Hobnobbing with the king and queen. I said something to them and they left the thrown room..."HOW RUDE!" Anyway since they left I decided to take a load off and test out their seats...errr throne. But it was soon time to set sail.

A couple new areas opened up to me. The Mines and this little Village. So I decided to explore this village first. Not much Happening here although I think something bad is happening. The music is good but depressing. So I moved onto the mines. The mines were full of action it took me a good hour to clear it out. Had some great puzzles in there. One thing about Anearth is there is alot of back tracking and puzzle solving. I love this sort of thing. It's nice to really get to know a town, village and Dungeon. Most RPG's go with this massive map to explore when really you can do plenty with the map the size of anearth or cosmic fantasy for instance. I think in todays RPG's they really concentrate to much on the massive instead of the quality. From my 9 hours of Anearth I do believe it could be the most quality RPG That I have played in my life.

I didn't do it! I swear I didn't clear out your house! Haha It was Runin I saw him do it! He was here yesterday!

Until Tommorrow..........SPREAD THE JOY OF PCENGINE!

The Curse Lives on!

Years ago I received a game in mailbox called street smart for the sega Genesis. Well it was pretty bad...and a curse was started....I sent the cartridge out to someone...who sent it to someone....who sent it to someone...ETC ETC. Well 20 years or so later I get an SNK insert (which fits perfect on my old crt BTW) of Street Smart for an SNK arcade Cab. HaHa Great joke!
